Ujjain

Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, with the temple and city referenced extensively across Puranic literature as an ancient centre of Shiva worship.

Legend holds that Lord Shiva manifested here as Mahakal — the ruler of time and death — to destroy the demon Dushana and protect the people of Ujjain, and stayed on at their request as the city's eternal protector.

Mahakaleshwar is the only Jyotirlinga whose idol faces south (Dakshinamukhi) — a rare feature in the tantric Shivnetra tradition, symbolising Shiva's authority over death itself and his protection of devotees from untimely death.

The temple's signature ritual is the Bhasma Aarti, performed around 4:00–6:00 AM with sacred ash, with reporting for entry starting as early as 2:30 AM. Bhog, Sandhya and Shayan Aartis follow through the day.
