History
Har Ki Pauri is a ghat more than twenty centuries old, its construction credited to King Vikramaditya, built in memory of his brother Bharat who meditated on the banks of the Ganga here. The ghat was extended and renovated in 1938 and again in 1986.
Religious Significance
A rock here is believed to bear the footprint of Lord Vishnu, giving the ghat its name "Har Ki Pauri" (steps of the Lord). Another legend holds that drops of nectar (amrit) fell here during the Samudra Manthan, making Haridwar one of the four Kumbh Mela sites.
What's Special
This is the point where the Bhagirathi Ganga first leaves the Himalayas and enters the plains — making Haridwar the traditional gateway to the Char Dham yatra.
How to Do Darshan
The Ganga Aarti is held daily, roughly 5:30–6:30 AM and 6:00–7:00 PM, opening with the chant of "Ganga Lahari". Arrive 45 minutes early for the morning aarti and 75 minutes early for the evening aarti to get a good spot.
