History
The iconic Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan was built in 1864, following the devotional life of the 16th-century saint Swami Haridas, who spent years in deep meditation and music at Nidhivan.
Religious Significance
Swami Haridas is said to have received the divine darshan of Radha and Krishna together; on his prayer, the divine couple merged into a single black idol so devotees could experience their combined presence without being overwhelmed.
What's Special
"Banke" means bent at three places and "Bihari" means enjoyer — referring to Krishna's Tribhanga posture. The temple is famous for its jhanki darshan, where a curtain before the deity opens and closes every minute, since prolonged eye contact is believed to deeply affect devotees. How to Do Darshan
The temple is generally open daily from 7:45 AM to 9:30 PM, with timings varying by season. Expect the curtain-based jhanki style rather than continuous viewing.
