Traditionally open to anyone regardless of age, gender, caste or religion, once energised/purified as guided by an Acharya.
When to wear / begin
Best begun on a Monday (Shiva's day) or Thursday, ideally early morning (4:30–7:30 AM) after bathing; Mahashivratri, Shravan Somvar and Amavasya are considered especially auspicious.
Precautions / who should avoid
Avoid wearing during illness with an open wound near the neck, and traditional guidance advises avoiding it during non-vegetarian food/alcohol consumption, at cremation grounds/funerals, and sharing your own beads with others.
